Because one-third of children today are overweight or obese.  This is not something that should be ignored.  This is a serious situation with dire consequences if not remedied.  Roughly 80% of obese and overweight children from ages 10-15 will be obese at age 25.

Obesity in children leads to physical, social, emotional and academic difficulties.

Physical
Overweight and obese children are at greater risk for hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, stroke, asthma, Type II Diabetes and other diseases.  These are just a few of the health issues, there are many more but the words are too big and too tough to spell.  The consequences are dire.

Social/Emotional
Let’s face it kids can be cruel. Self-esteem and interaction difficulties can result from discrimination of overweight or obese kids. Studies have shown increased rates of depression and other social problems that may carry over into adulthood.

Academic
There are countless studies indicating lower academic and greater behavioral problems among children who are overweight and/or obese.
